The Girl and Her Name

Anna Marie Leininger arrived at 5:18 pm, Tuesday, December 28, 2010. 6 pounds, 9 oz, 19 3/4 inches long. She is perfect and we are all in love with her. Chances are, if you have had a conversation with me in the past few months, you know that this time around, choosing a name for our baby was very difficult. We went through list after list, only to practically veto all of each others picks, and just feel so-so about what was left. The process for us is complicated slightly by the fact that we are raising our family bilingual (or at least, attempting to do so) and it is important to us that names we choose sound equally good in both English and Spanish. That eliminates a lot of names. At one point, we agreed on Sofia, only to find out, the very next day, that Sofia had jumped to #1 baby name of 2010. I just couldn't do it. In the end, it came down to a name that we had considered, but that had somehow been overshadowed by other names on the list. And suddenly, we knew it was perfect. So we have a little Anna Marie in our family. Anna, for my great-grandma, Anna Hendricksen Pratt, the great matriarch of our branch of the Pratt family. I have been attending family reunions of her posterity since I can remember, and could tell you all kinds of incredible stories about her, her faith, her dedication to family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I'll have to post some of those another time. Marie, for Jon's great-grandma, Marie Cutler, mother of Gordon Cutler who floundered a bit before moving to California and eloping to Las Vegas with Alice Fares. When Marie came to visit the couple, Gordon forbade her from sharing the Gospel or the Book or Mormon with his bride. But Marie didn't listen. She gave Alice a copy of the Book of Mormon, and Alice found it to be true. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Gordon returned to activity in the church, they were sealed in the temple, and raised five wonderful children, one of whom they named Susan, who was also married in the temple, and gave birth to Jonathan, our Anna Marie's daddy. Also, Marie for her aunts, Lauren Marie, Maria Ann, Rachel Marie, and in honor of her other aunts, Diana Lee, Joy Elise, and Christine Elizabeth. We hope that she will remember, and emulate these great women as she grows. Welcome to the world, sweet Anna Marie!

In case you were wondering...

Since I know you are all sitting around biting your nails and wondering what happened at my appointment, I will ease your curiosity...

Nothing much.

Slightly more dilated, but nothing significant. My OB was willing to induce yesterday, but the hospital was booked, and to be honest, I was relieved to not have to make the decision whether to go for it or not.

So she scheduled an induction for next Tuesday (the 28th) in case I haven't had the baby by then. And who knows, but I'm thinking I will probably end up being induced. And hoping to have a nice, quiet Christmas at home with my family.

Some snow would be nice, too.

39 Weeks

Here I am, 39 weeks, feeling large, and hoping this baby arrives in the next two days, or decides to wait until after Christmas. So far today, I have walked the mall for two hours, done several reps of stairs, two at a time, and as I write this, I'm bouncing on a trampoline (thank you smart phone). Will it be enough? We'll see, perhaps, at my drs appointment this afternoon. Wish us luck!

Never Too Late to be Thankful

I realized that I never posted about out Thanksgiving. How ungrateful of me! We took a fantastic trip up to NYC to see Diana, Jonny, and of course, baby David.

We also got the bonus of seeing my mom who was there helping with the baby.

We had an uneventful drive up, got to see the Macy's parade balloons being inflated,

hit up FAO Schwartz and the Big Piano (which Olivia absolutely adored. We thought about getting her one for Christmas , but it turns out it costs more than our house, so we reconsidered.)

Thursday we had a fantastic meal,

and got to cuddle precious David (who Olivia absolutely adored. I think a new baby for Christmas is a little more do-able at this point...).

Thursday night we drove back to Baltimore with my mom, and the next morning Jon dropped her off at the airport so she could have Thanksgiving #2 with my dad and sisters. Friday afternoon we drove down to Virginia to see some of Jon's extended family, and Olivia got to play with her second cousins Hannah and Charlie.

It was such a great weekend, and for it, and all of my many blessings, I am truly thankful.

Christmas is coming...

and I'm ready! Since I don't know when this baby is going to arrive, I have made it a point to be READY for Christmas. I've got gifts purchased, wrapped, and sent off where applicable. We have our decorations up, the stocking-stuffers are sorted and in labeled bags, ready to be "stuffed", the Christmas cookie dough is made and in the freezer, ready to be baked before we deliver them, we've made our gingerbread house, our rice krispie treats, and have been reading a scripture from the advent calendar (and eating the accompanying chocolate, of course) each night. Last night, Jon even did us a favor, and ate up all the chocolate we missed...5 pieces in all, he said. Thanks, honey! ;) Olivia's Christmas pictures have been taken, though she's not smiling in a single one (thanks, JC Penny picture lady!) and we even have some gifts for baby sister.

Speaking of whom... the hospital bag is packed, complete with a gift for Olivia when she comes to the hospital, chocolates for the doctors and nurses, to buy their love, of course, and some good, long, chick-flicks, just in case this labor is as looooong as Olivia's.

As of last night, I am done teaching for the semester, so no more commitments there, and I'm finally starting to kick this cold.

I even (finally) finished Olivia's baby book!

So with all of that preparation complete, I'm not sure what this baby is waiting for. I realize that my due date is 1.5 weeks away, but with the level of discomfort I am feeling, I really wouldn't mind her coming, say, now-ish?

Maybe she's still waiting for us to pick out a name for her. I guess we should get on that.

My Favorite Girl in the World (while I can still say that...)

Here are a few things about my sweet Olivia, at 18 months, that I just have to share while she is still my baby, and my one and only favorite girl in the world...

*She is in LOVE with shoes. She plays with them all the time, and "shoosh" was one of her first words.
*She is SOO sweet. She loves to give kisses. She gives them to me, to Jon, to her dollies, duckies, doggies, etc. She also gives kisses to pictures, like pictures of President Monson, Baby Jesus, and baby pictures of herself. She has graduated from the open mouth kiss to the semi-puckered up kiss accompanied by a "mmmmmmm-ma!" sound.

*She loves to help mommy and daddy. She throws things away, gets things for us when we ask, etc.

*She is SO friendly!! She loves going up to people saying "Hi!" She also loves to say "Ba-BYE!" Exceptions to this friendliness include Santa Clause and the JC Penny Portrait lady. She doesn't like them at all. (We went to see the Mall Santa, and she refused to even look at him, let alone sit on his lap. Then at our Church Christmas Party, I showed her how all the other kids were sitting on his lap, and that he was giving out candy canes. When it was her turn, she walked right up to him, grabbed the candy canes, turned around and ran away! I tried to sit her in his lap, and she screamed, so I held her for a picture, which she still wasn't too pleased about.)
*She is learning SO many words. My favorite is "Ow-Búho" ("Owl" in English and then in Spanish). She says this when we go in the baby's room, which she cannot get enough of.

*She has a sweet tooth. She announces "nummy, nummy, nummy!" whenever she sees sweets, which, during this time of year, is quite frequently.

*She absolutely has a mind of her own. She does what she wants when she wants to. I wonder where she could have gotten that trait?

*She LOVES babies. She frequently points to my belly and says "bibi". She loves to give kisses to my belly too.

*She is a great sleeper! She typically sleeps 12-13 hours each night, and then takes a 2-3 hour nap. I have been spoiled...having a newborn again is going to be an adjustment.

*She STILL loves to dance. Our nightly ritual is to turn on some fun Christmas music, and let her rock out. She runs around, marches, shuffles, bounces, and has herself a great time!

*She loves the hymn book. One of her favorite things to do is pull the hymnal off the shelf and turn the pages. Sometimes she "sings" while doing so.

*She is a total girly-girl. She loves to wear her little string of pearls, and she watches me doing my makeup and wants me to put some on her. The other day I was painting my nails, and she came up holding out her hands and making her "I want that!" sound. So I told her I would paint her nails if she held very still, and she did! So fun!

She is my little sweetie pie, and I can't get enough of her. Unless she is throwing a tantrum. But we're working on that.

LOVE MY LIVI!

Nesting

I have been nesting like CRAZY! In the past week, I basically started and finished the nursery (only a couple of minor things left, but it is fully functional), cleaned and organized the entire house, STOCKED up on food, and started prepping freezer meals. It is so fun to check things off my list! Olivia has been very sweet and patient as I have dragged her along on all my outings. As of today, I am full term, dilated to a 2, and my doctor says she doesn't think I'll still be pregnant for Christmas. Of course, with my history (Olivia was born 9 days late, and I was induced) I am having trouble believing that. BUT, if she does decide to make an early appearance, we will be ready for her! Here are a few photos of the nursery (Olivia's toddler bed is in there as well. She is still in the crib in her room, and once she's ready for a bed, they'll either share, or switch rooms.)Changing table, dresser, glider, made the pillow and the valance. (and made the wall hangings and painted the dresser...but if you've been reading, you already know that.) :)

Owl mobile (my friend Michelle made this for me...LOVE it!), and Owl lighting (I "made" the owl lantern...or, made the lantern into an owl.)

Toddler bed. I made the owl pillow, and the quilt was made by my mom for Olivia when she was born.

White mini-crib. I made the bumpers and the crib skirt. :)

I still want to add a small bookshelf in front of all those cords you see to the right of the crib. But clothes are washed and folded in the dresser or hung in the closet, diapers and wipes have been purchased, and I think we're set!

Happy go to Nursery

My big girl started nursery today. And with #2 coming any time, it's not a moment too soon. Liv LOVED it. If she had the vocabulary, she would have said, "there's a room with TOYS!? You've been holding out on me!" We stayed with her for the first hour, and then left. There were no tears, no fights, and she apparently sat quietly for the lesson. It would be nice if she acted that way during FHE! Regardless, I am so proud of my girl, and I can't believe how grown up she is!

Newbies

This week has been quite eventful in our family. We have had TWO new additions! On Monday, my sister Diana gave birth to sweet little David Lev. Wednesday, as David and Diana went home from the hospital, Maria gave birth to precious Elise Jane. Both look just like their daddies and I can't wait to meet them both! We will see David (NYC) next week for Thanksgiving, but we have to wait to see Elise (SoCal) until March when we head out there for a family wedding. Congrats to my sisters & bro's in law. So much love!

Little Project

I picked up this dresser on Craigslist for $20, primed it with spray paint, painted it with white enamel, and sprayed the knobs with pink high gloss spray paint. It's for the new baby's room, and I might be in love with it. I can't wait to get that room put together!

Cover Snatcher

No one likes a cover stealer, but I have inadvertently become one. It must be due to my incessant tossing and turning, thanks to my enlarged abdomen. Last night when I woke up to use the bathroom (for the second time) I looked across the great divide of our bed (my necessary body pillow) to see my husband completely without sheets or blankets. It was a chilly night, too! Poor guy. Thankfully, when I mentioned it in the morning, he had no recollection of the incident.

Halloween Bugs!

We enjoyed lots of fun Halloween Festivities this year! I LOVE Halloween, and it was so fun to see Olivia enjoy it too. On Thursday we attended a playgroup Halloween party, hosted by my friend Regina. It was lots of fun to get the kiddos together all dressed up. Then on Saturday, we went to The Avenue (a local set of nice shops and restaurants) for trick-or-treating. It was packed, but Olivia caught on right away that they were giving out treats!

Saturday evening was the ward Trunk-or-Treat, which was tons of fun! The unborn and unnamed baby donned her very first Halloween costume! Since Olivia was a ladybug, we went with the bug theme this year. Baby was a little caterpillar, in her cocoon, of course!
The whole family at the trunk-or-treat!
Inside now, not so washed out. I was a butterfly, and Jon was a spider if you can't tell. I was mistaken for a pregnant fairy, and he was mistaken for a "night stalker", so maybe our costumes needed a little work...oh well. ;)
I don't have any pictures, but Sunday evening, I made "dinner in a pumpkin" and we had a few friends over to share our meal and family home evening. We were only interrupted by a couple hundred trick-or-treaters! :) We had a great time, and it was a bang of a way to end the fantastic month of October!

Bring it on, November! Christmas shopping, I'm all over you!

Autumn Time...Again

It looks like Chapel Hills Farm is starting to be an Autumn tradition for our family! Can you believe how much she's grown!?Autumn 2009

Autumn 2010

Growing Girl

Olivia is turning into SUCH a big girl! She is talking more (possibly thanks to us taking away the binky except for nap time and night time...oh, and church...). Some of her favorite words are "Daddy", "no, no, no", "oh, cool" (sounds like "oh, ghoul"), "yummy nummy", "doggie", and "hi" (used for "hi" and "bye").

She loves to wear her shoes, eat with a spoon by herself (though this is still messy), and "help" around the house. She throws her own diapers away, picks up toys (with encouragement) and helps set the table, among other things.

Jon has been so busy this semester with work + school that there are usually a couple days a week when he leaves before she's up and gets home after she is in bed. This is turning her into quite the daddy's girl. When he's home, she wants HIM! It's so sweet!

Today is a perfect, crisp, fall day, and we decided to go for a walk and gather some leaves. Olivia had a GREAT time! I didn't get any pictures of the fall colors (gorgeous!) but here are some of my girl (also gorgeous...in my humble opinion). :)

Leftover Makeover

I have been trying really hard lately not to let any food go to waste. So in my weekly meal planning, I've been checking out the refrigerator to see what's there, and planning around that. For example, the pork roast I made two Sundays ago for carnitas has also become pork burritos, pork paninis, and toasted pork cheesesteak. I still have one more meal's worth of pork waiting in my freezer. This past Sunday, I made WAY too much couscous to go along with our yogurt-marinated chicken skewers, so I had to get a little creative. After a bit of online browsing for inspiration, this is what I came up with...

Couscous & Feta Stuffed Peppers

1/2 recipe for curry couscous

2-4 bell peppers (I can't usually bring myself to pay twice as much for red, so I go with green, but this week red were on sale for the same price as green, and were bigger!)

1 yellow squash

1 small onion

1 tomato

1/2 lb. ground beef

3/4 C feta cheese

salt & pepper

I cut the tops of the peppers, and boiled them.

Chopped up all the veggies (including the tops of the peppers).

Pulled out my leftover couscous

and feta cheese.

Browned the ground beef and seasoned with salt & pepper,

added the veggies and sauteed until they were tender

Added the couscous and feta, and mixed it all up.

Then stuffed my peppers, and added the extra filling to the bottom of the pan!

I did this during nap time and covered it in foil. It's in my fridge waiting to bake tonight. I'll probably serve it with rice, but it would be good as a stand alone meal too.

What are some of your favorite things to do with leftovers?
